Sky TV’s HD Success Story
Sky TV has taken a substantial lead in the HD TV race in recent months, largely thanks to its promotion of deals such as Supertelly but more importantly to the decision Sky took in early 2010 to issue the Sky+HD Box as standard with all of its packages. This has given the box a ubiquity which will only grow, as new customers take the HD box whatever deal they go for but only receive the HD content if they opt to pay the £10 a month subscription for the HD Pack, establishing a huge base of potential HD customers who’ll be able to adopt those deals with a quick phone call now they are all set eqiuipment-wise.
It’s very good marketing but will only win through if the Sky TV deals are good enough to beat the competition’s HD offering – essentially Virgin Media and BT Vision. At £28 a month for a starter HD package with free box and currently a £25 M&S voucher (which will doubtless be extended or replaced with a new offer) it looks like Sky could do very well, depending of course how the recent court decision on the wholesale price they charge their competitors for Sky Sports affects the market.
